New Mégane R.S. Trophy-R scorches to its second record
Renault Sports’ hottest ever hatch, New Mégane R.S. Trophy-R has gone and done it again - breaking its second record of the year today with a new fastest front-wheel drive time at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, as part of one of the company’s R.S. Days ahead of the prestigious 24 Hours of Spa race this weekend.
New Mégane R.S. Trophy-R, driven again by Renault Sports’ long-serving test driver Laurent Hurgon, completed the lap in a time of 2:48.338.
The against-the-clock record comes hot on the heels of the Trophy-R’s other record-breaking lap in April of this year when the latest addition to the Mégane R.S. family took the fastest front-wheel drive crown at Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife track.
The Trophy-R’s latest endeavour was not only notable for its record-breaking run, but for also being set at one of the R.S. Days celebrations of all things Renault. It was watched in real time by marque enthusiasts around the world thanks to live streaming on social media.
Heroic driver Hurgon said: “I am, once again, really proud and delighted. Spa-Francorchamps is one of the favourite European circuits for drivers. It is very fast and complex and the car is perfect for this configuration. The work done on the aerodynamic balance proved its value. The sensation in the Raidillon, Pouhon and Blanchimont corners was really excellent. What a pleasure!”
The Trophy-R, set to go on limited-edition sale later this year, is the latest chapter in the Mégane R.S. story that began 15 years ago and underlines Renault Sports’ commitment to breaking boundaries in challenge and performance.
The new record breaker is equipped with the same 300hp engine as its sister model the Mégane R.S. Trophy but owes its increased speed to a 130kg weight reduction, work on its aerodynamics and more radical development of its suspension.
Renault Sport Cars General Manager Patrice Ratti said: “The new Mégane R.S. Trophy-R has set a new record in its category, this time at Spa-Francorchamps, one of the most demanding circuits in the world. A record all the better for being set in front of a community of enthusiasts as part of R.S. Days.
“Just the performance, the closeness between the driver at work and the fans, a beautiful sharing of information and passion: this is the attitude that permeates the development of our cars and the very special relationship with our community.”
