Twingo R1 Rallycross Cup makes successful start
The new Twingo R1 Rallycross Cup got under way at Châteauroux – St-Maur on the first weekend of June, with 25 Twingo R1s competing in the opening round of an event that forms part of the French Championship season.
Developed by Renault Sport Technologies and designed especially for the sport, the new Twingo R1 Rallycross is based on the production version of the Twingo Renaultsport. Powered by a four-cylinder, 16-valve, 1598cc Renault K4M Renaultsport engine delivering 133bhp, this front-wheel drive Twingo weighs in at 1,050kg with the driver on board.
The Twingo R1 Rallycross Cup is open to registered drivers over the age of 16 and who finished outside the top three in the 2012 French Championship and French Rallycross Cup. Meanwhile, a French Junior Rallycross Championship is open to drivers born after 31 December 1987, with the winner of the 2013 championship earning a drive in a Twingo R2 Evolution for the entire 2014 French Championship season.
The winner of last year’s Logan Cup, Fabien Grosset-Janin took the honours in the season opener. Fastest in practice, he made the most of pole position to lead from start to finish and take the chequered flag from Echappement magazine/French Motorsports Federation pick Tom Daunat, a newcomer to the discipline.
Aurelien Crochard took third place ahead of Julien Anodeau and Andrea Dubourg.
Round two of the Cup will take place on 29-30 June at the Rallycross de Sarthe-Lavaré.
