Maiden pole for Dennis Olsen
Held in damp conditions, Sunday’s Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 qualifying session at the Nürburgring saw Dennis Olsen (Prema Powerteam) score his first pole in the category. The Norwegian will be joined on the front row by Nick Cassidy (Koiranen GP) and the wildcard Charles Leclerc (Fortec Motorsports), with the Koiranen GP duo of Ignazio D’Agosto and Nyck de Vries lining up behind them.
Though rain was falling as they took to the track, the drivers in Group B gradually mastered the tricky conditions. As the lap times came down, the battle for first became a private one between Koiranen GP team-mates Nick Cassidy and Ignazio D’Agosto, with the New Zealander winning it with a time of 2:13.514. Jack Aitken (Fortec Motorsports) followed up yesterday’s podium finish by going third-fastest.
The Group A drivers also managed to pick up the pace in their session, though it was not until the end of it that Nick Cassidy’s time was beaten, with Dennis Olsen posting a lap of 2:12.836 to come in ahead of Charles Leclerc and Nyck de Vries.
The second Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race of the weekend starts at 15.25.
Dennis Olsen: “I made a mistake in yesterday’s qualifying and it cost me a lot of places on the grid. Everything went well today, though, and the car was perfect to drive. I did my job and it’s brought me my first pole.”
