The first semi-final in our Greatest Formula Renault Graduate tournament begins today with a battle between Didier Pironi and Robert Kubica.
The first head-to-head pits two hopefuls whose careers were cruelly shattered as France’s Didier Pironi takes on Poland’s Robert Kubica.
Voting is open for 24 hours just until Thursday June 4th, 14:00 CET. The Semi-Finals results will be announced at the conclusion of the round on Wednesday June 5th.
Didier Pironi
French Formula Renault Champion in 1974, then winner of the Formula Renault Europe Challenge in 1976, Didier Pironi also won in the streets of Monaco in 1975 and in 1976, then in F3 the following year. A year later, the French driver won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Renault while also making his F1 debut, where he was also successful. Didier Pironi’s career came to an abrupt end after an accident during practice for the 1982 German Grand Prix while he was leading the general classification.
Robert Kubica
The rich career of Robert Kubica began with a learning year in Formula Renault, followed by a run for the Italian title in his second season. After a stint in F3, he returned to the Renault scene in 2005 to become the first-ever driver crowned in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. This led to his first taste of F1 power with Renault F1 Team before his debut in the pinnacle during the 2006 season and his one and only win at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix.
