May 24 was a 2019 diary date for any motorsports fan wanting to see the exciting new Renault Sport tackle the hairpin corners and narrow straights of the iconic street track, few days only after the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R set a new front-wheel-drive record of 07:40.100 at the “Green Hell” of the Nordschleife, the Nürburgring’s famous North Loop.

The test driver behind the wheel, Laurent Hurgon, has a history of breaking records with Renault Sport cars. With the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R he conquered his own record of 7:54.36, set five years ago in the Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy-R and undefeated for a full production car (available to buy in the same configuration as the record) - until now!

In 2008, the Mégane II R26.R, driven by Vincent Bayle, first broke the lap record with a time of 8:17. Three years later, the Mégane R.S. III 265 Trophy, with Laurent Hurgon at the wheel, took only 8:07.97 to cover the 20.832km distance. Then in 2014, Hurgon returned to break his own record in the Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy-R, the first time a FWD vehicle had beaten the eight-minute barrier.

The Mégane R.S. Trophy-R was built to break records, combining Renault Sport’s passion for motorsport, technology and fun into one supreme driving package. The Monaco Grand Prix weekend saw the stars of F1 return to a circuit widely considered the most challenging in motor racing, and the most popular with spectators.

Renault Sport fans also enjoyed a weekend of racing in the Formula Renault Eurocup, a vehicle with the same engine as the Mégane R.S., as well as enjoying the sight of the two Mégane R.S. Trophy-R cars being driven by our very own Renault F1 Team drivers, Nico and Daniel.
