Trémoulet and Azcona on pole at Le Castellet

Eric Trémoulet (Vic’Team) and Mikel Azcona (PCR Sport) kept the pressure on championship leader Oscar Nogues (Rangoni Corse) by claiming a pole position apiece in Saturday’s Eurocup Clio qualifying sessions at the Circuit Paul Ricard. Azcona posted a new track record in taking the second session ahead of Oscar Nogues, who also finished second in session one. Alex Morgan (Rangoni Corse) and Facundo Della Motta (Pujolaracing) will complete the top five on both grids.

The day’s opening session belonged to France’s Eric Trémoulet. Ivan Pulić (Lema Racing Team) was the first to post a time, with Facundo Della Motta then taking over at the top of the timesheets. The 2013 Renault Clio Cup Coupe de France champion nudged him out of the way with a time of 2:28.628 at the midway point, and closed the session out ahead of points leader Oscar Nogues, with Mikel Azcona, Alex Morgan and Facundo Della Motta rounding off the top five, followed by Massimiliano Pedalà.

The pace quickened in the battle for Sunday’s grid placings, with Mikel Azcona eclipsing the track record set by Oscar Nogues on Friday and then going even faster to clock a time of 2:27.913. He was followed home by Oscar Nogues and Eric Trémoulet, with Alex Morgan and Facundo Della Motta again completing the front five and Massimiliano Pedalà coming in behind them.

Saturday’s Eurocup Clio race at the Circuit Paul Ricard begins at 17.25, with Sunday’s getting under way at 16.00.
