They celebrate season ten of WSR with us #4: Sébastien Buemi

Though still only 25, Sebastien Buemi has a wealth of single-seater experience under his belt. His Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 win at Donington eight years ago was a key step on his climb up to Formula One. Now an official Red Bull driver, he makes his return to the World Series by Renault paddock this week to take part in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing F1 Show, giving us the perfect opportunity to have a chat with him.

Name one track you dreamed of driving when you were young.
“They all made me dream, though none more than Monaco and Spa. The first time I drove Monaco it was incredible. It really was a wonderful experience.”

A driver you dreamed of beating.
“Michael Schumacher was my idol. In 2010 I passed him three laps from the end of the Canadian Grand Prix, en route to finishing eighth. He was my boyhood hero and it was a very special moment.”

A job you dreamed of doing when you were young.
“This one. It really was my dream when I was a little boy. My parents have always supported me and when I started karting at the age of five, I guess it was kind of their dream too.”

A race you’ve dreamed of taking part in.
“Any race that’s gone down in the history of motorsport, like one of the big Senna-Prost duels, especially Suzuka in 1989 and 1990, or the last F1 grand prix of 2008, when the title was decided on the last corner of the last lap. That was a really great race.”

Your happiest memory of World Series by Renault.
“My Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 win at Donington in 2006. There were sometimes 40 cars or so in 2.0 at the time, which was more than any other single-seater championship. It was very competitive, so when you won you knew you’d done a good job.”

It’s World Series by Renault’s tenth season this year. Can you tell us what you were doing ten years ago?
“I was in my first season in single seaters, after karting. Wow, that was ten years ago.”

And what will you be doing in ten years’ time?
“Still driving! I hope to still be involved in F1 or the World Endurance Championship, which I’m taking part in this year and which is an important discipline too.”
