The final sprint begins in Budapest
The Hungaroring marks the return to action for the World Series by Renault. Included on the calendar since 2007, Budapest will welcome the Formula Renault 3.5 Series and Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 for round five of the 2014 season. For this classic on the Fast, Free and Fun event schedule, the Hungarian fans will be spoiled with a dense programme mixing the races of the F1 driver development academy put in place by Renault Sport Technologies and the numerous attractions, including the Infiniti Red Bull Racing F1 Show.
Home of the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986, the Hungaroring allows young guns to measure themselves on a track that is now a staple in the sport’s premier championship. Integrated into the World Series by Renault in 2007, the Hungarian round offers a technical challenge to aspiring champions.
The success of the World Series by Renault is unwavering with more than 100,000 fans each season. Last year, the massive crowd witnessed races that were decisive in the championship battles and this edition promises more of the same! The main attraction, the Infiniti Red Bull Racing F1 Show will feature 13-time Grand Prix winner, David Coulthard!
Alongside the Renault Classic Show and Renault Sport Show, the New Renault Twingo will be at the Hungaroring to put in a public demonstration run concurrently to the many free attractions of the New Renault Village. With driving simulators to the Pit Stop Challenge in addition to road safety booths, spectators will enjoy all that the Renault world has to offer.
Formula Renault 3.5 Series: two Spaniards for the lead
Leading the championship since Monza, Carlos Sainz (DAMS) heads into the final sprint as the overwhelming favourite. The Red Bull Junior Team driver will want to show that he has what it takes to move up to F1, while also trying to pull away from fellow Spaniard, Roberto Merhi (Zeta Corse), who scored a large number of points before the summer break and is as ambitious as ever to take the title following his first free-practice session with the Caterham F1 Team this Friday.
Other drivers also want to remain in contention. Winner at Budapest in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 last year, Pierre Gasly (Arden Motorsport) would like to take his maiden victory in the category especially since Fortec Motorsport’s Oliver Rowland and Sergey Siroktin are right behind him in the points. A top three finisher at the Hungaroring in 2012, Will Stevens (Strakka Racing) completes the chase group and he too would like to move up a few places in the hierarchy.
Zoel Amberg (AVF) has a few points in hand from the rest of the drivers in the top ten, which includes Marlon Stockinger (Lotus), Jazeman Jaafar (ISR) and Norman Nato (DAMS). All want to battle at the front of the field straight away. This goal will be shared by Matias Laine (Strakka Racing), whose streak of five point scoring results was broken just before the summer break, and Pietro Fantin (International Draco Racing) and Matthieu Vaxiviere (Lotus), who took his first podium result in Germany.
For Luca Ghiotto (International Draco Racing), William Buller (Arden Motorsport), Oscar Tunjo (Pons Racing), Meindert van Buuren (Pons Racing), Beitske Visser (AVF) and Roman Mavlanov (Zeta Corse), the tight and technical Hungaroring track could offer the opportunity to shine and score precious points. After finishing just outside the top ten in his debut, Cameron Twynham (Comtec Racing) will be back, while Tech 1 Racing will line-up Canadian Nicholas Latifi alongside Marco Sørensen.

Eurocup Formula Renault 2. : Nyck de Vries wants to widen the gap
There were six different winners in the first six races of the season. At the Nürburgring, Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) became the first two-time victor this year. The Dutchman also pulled away in the general classification before heading to a meeting that he won at in 2013.
The only competitor other than the member of the McLaren Young Driver Development Programme to hold down the top spot, Dennis Olsen (Prema Powerteam) imitated Nyck de Vries in also taking his second victory of the year. Now in chase mode, the Norwegian wants to reduce the 30-point deficit that separates him from the leader ahead of the Hungarian weekend.
Following two scoreless rounds, Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam) is third overall. The Brazilian has to get back on form as he is now under threat from the outsiders in the category, Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP Motorsport), Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Alexander Albon (KTR), who picked up his first win in open-wheel racing last weekend in the North European Cup. The gaps are narrow and Aurélien Panis (ART Junior Team) could also move up the hierarchy as could Egor Orudzhev (Tech 1 Racing).
After leaving Germany with no points, Levin Amweg (ART Junior Team), Matt Parry (Fortec Motorsports) and Callan O’Keeffe (ART Junior Team) all want to do well as the season comes back to life, but the competition will be rude. Ignazio D’Agosto (Koiranen GP) and Jack Aitken (Fortec Motorsports), each of whom picked up their first podium results and are now closing in on the top ten, as are Nick Cassidy (Koiranen GP) and Anthoine Hubert (Tech 1 Racing).
Formula Renault 3.5 Series team, Strakka Racing will make its Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 debut with Jake Hughes. Front runners in the ALPS championship, Luke Chudleigh (Tech 1 Racing) and Charles Leclerc (Fortec Motorsports) have received wild-card entries.

"We are all happy with the resumption to the season in Hungary", explains Renault Sport Technologies Competition Director, Jean-Pascal Dauce. "The atmosphere around the circuit is fantastic, the Hungarian public always comes out in droves and the races are often thrilling! With its twisty layout, elevation changes and rare passing opportunities, the drivers will have no choice but to take risks during this weekend that could be determinant in the title battles! The balance of the cars will also be paramount in the sequence of slow and fast chicanes, but also in the final corner that precedes the use of the DRS on the front straight."
The driver’s eye
Pierre Gasly (Arden Motorsport) : "The Hungaroring is the most technical track of the season. It is a unique circuit, bumpy and has a lot of fast and slow corners. A lot of compromise is needed. Qualifying will be very important for a strong result or in my case a first win. I have fond memories of Hungary because I won a race here last year. My team, Arden Motorsport has also won here with Antonio Félix da Costa. After taking stock during the break, we are setting off with a strong base and I am very motivated to get this first triumph!"
