The World Series by Renault takes its summer break

The fourth of the year, the Nürburgring meeting is the last before the start of the World Series by Renault’s extended summer break. Ahead lie two months in which the drivers can take a well-earned rest and recharge their batteries before reconvening for the second half of the campaign, which begins at the Hungaroring on 13-14 September.

Carlos Sainz, Nyck de Vries and Oscar Nogués, the respective leaders in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Eurocup Clio standings, spoke to us about their plans for the summer and whether they will be watching the World Cup final before setting off for a deserved break.

What have you got planned for the holidays?

Carlos Sainz: “I’m going to spend some time in Russia first of all, for some Formula One roadshows. Then in August I’ll be going off for my holidays in Mallorca. After all the stress of these last five months, I’m going to switch off from racing and spend some time with my family and friends. I’ll be doing some cycling as usual, just for fun and to stay in shape. When I get back I’ll be concentrating hard on my objectives, so I’m really going to relax and unwind.”

Nyck de Vries: “I don’t have any plans for the moment. I’m probably going to have a few racing commitments and I’ll be going to London and Geneva. Then I’ll probably go and spend a few days at a friend’s house in Spain.”

Oscar Nogués: “I’ve got some professional commitments outside racing and I’ve already taken some days off to drive in Eurocup Clio and the Italian championship. I’ve only got four or five days left over. I’m going to make the most of them and have a break, but it won’t be a long one.”

Will you be following the World Cup final? Who will you be supporting?

Carlos Sainz: “You bet. I’ll be on the plane back to Madrid when the game is on though, so I’ll be recording it… and hoping I can avoid seeing the result before I watch it! I’m supporting Germany and I think they deserve to win. They’ve got Real Madrid players in the team too.”

Nyck de Vries:
“I’ve been following the World Cup very closely, especially as the Netherlands did so well. They couldn’t make the final, which was a shame, but I’m still very proud of what they’ve done. I’ll be cheering Germany on tonight. I don’t want to predict the score, but I’ll be happy as long as Germany win.”

Oscar Nogués: “Sorry, but I’m not a football fan!”
