The Renault Sport Challenge heads to Brittany

Now an established event on western France’s rally scene, the Rallye National de Bretagne hosts the fifth round of this year’s Renault Sport Challenge and the midway point of the season. Fifteen crews will be taking to the start line, eight of them in R1, a class record.

Continuing its tour of the country, the Renault Sport Challenge heads to western France and the Morbihan on 21-22 June, when the fifth round of the season will take place at the fourth Rallye National de Bretagne. On the schedule are four specials to be driven three times each.

The Renault Sport Challenge is set to continue its success, with 15 crews entering the event, which is based in Plouay, Brittany. Eight of them will be lining up in the R1 class, including this season’s leading lights. Joint championship frontrunners thanks to their performances in Dieppe and Ales, Antoine Margely and Francois-Xavier Delabarre are determined to maintain their rich vein of form, while co-leader Nicolas Renchet has chosen to sit the rally out.

Aurelien Lafont and Aurelien Verdenet opened their account for the season with a brilliant win in Le Gard and will be hoping to back it up with another convincing display. Top-five regulars Theo Chalal and Jonathan Sponem are aiming to kick on and claim a win, while Romain Auvert and Maxime Belivier, who won the season opener but have since slipped back to fourth in the standings, have designs on relaunching their title challenge.

Maxime Goetz/Fabien Janssens, Alexandre Cosson/Matthieu Chartier and Matthieu Tarif/Wilfrid Tarif are three crews who are also eyeing the podium, while Dorian Delagne/Romain Garel will be making their Renault Sport Challenge debut.

In the R2 class, points leaders Georges and Valerie Gonon are the crew to beat. With two wins to date, they will be out to increase their championship lead in the absence of their closest pursuer William Pitot. Third in the standings and competing close to home, Marvin Sorin and Karine Moinet will be intent on putting on a good display and closing up on the front two. Lying in fourth behind them, Jordan Mottard and Thierry Devaux have the incentive of building on their second place in Le Gard and keeping their momentum going.

The battle for points will also be intense in the R3/N4 class. Buoyed by their third place in Le Gard, Mickael Reydellet and Thomas Chauffray will look to continue their climb up the points standings, though Pascal and Caroline Berard, who will also be driving a Clio R.S. R3, will no doubt give them some stiff competition. Regulars since the start of the season, they lie second overall, and have Laurent Lacomy and Emmanuel Chene right in their sights. Competing in a Megane R.S. N4, the leaders in the class have the opportunity to stretch their advantage after being forced to sit out the last round in Le Gard. Out to give them a run for their money will be Anthony Cosson and Anne-Sophie Nourry, who will also be in a Megane R.S. N4 and who won in Dieppe in their only Renault Sport Challenge appearance of the season to date.
