The Clio Cup and Formula Renault 2.0 to conquer China

Renault Sport and promoter FRD Motorsports have signed an agreement for the introduction of the Clio Cup and Formula Renault 2.0 categories in China beginning with the 2015 season. The partnership is a continuation of Renault’s expansion strategy in China.

In the wake of the agreement with Dongfeng for the Chinese market for both production and sales of passenger vehicles, Renault is reinforcing its presence in China. From 2015, Clio Cup and Formula Renault 2.0 championships will be launched in China. Renault Sport entrusts the organization to the promoter FRD Motorsports.

After its European launch, crowned with success in 2013, the Formula Renault 2.0 China will aim to enable young local drivers to emerge and prepare to make their way to the highest levels of the sport.

Also organized and promoted by FRD Motorsports, the Clio Cup China Series will begin its seventh season next year with the latest version of the model, of which 150 units have been sold since 2013.

In order to insure the role of springboard to the professional ranks, FRD Motorsports will rely on its expertise of Chinese motor racing to detect the top drivers in each of the two categories.

Patrice Ratti, President of Renault Sport Technologies:
”This agreement is part of Renault’s overall strategy in China, where the brand is investing in major projects. Motor racing has always been front and centre of Renault’s identity. By bringing the latest Renault Sport innovations and the strength of our driver development programme as well as partnering with FRD and Kenneth Ma, a true pioneer of Chinese motor racing, we hope to contribute to the construction of a Chinese development programme that will allow future drivers to join the elite of the sport.”

Kenneth Ma, President of FRD Motorsports:
”Renault has been involved in motor racing for 116 years and has always made the right choices. When I began with two friends in 1997, motor racing was not a priority in China, but it was already natural to partner with Renault Sport because their involvement is flawless. For 15 years, we have wanted to develop a programme so that our best drivers become professionals. They now have modern technology to demonstrate their talent, just like the best European hopefuls who we see in the Formula Renault Championships. It is the same for the Clio Cup and I am convinced that this association will enhance the attractiveness of our categories.”
