Nyck de Vries bounces back to secure pole at Moscow

After his retirement at the end of the first lap on Saturday, Nyck de Vries (Korainen GP) bounced back this morning, dominating the qualification sessions to claim his fourth pole position of the season in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Joint occupant of the top spot in the overall classifications, the McLaren Young Driver Development Programme member will line up alongside Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing). Protégés of the Lotus F1 Junior Team and Caterham Racing Academy respectively, Alex Albon (KTR) and Matt Parry (Fortec Motorsports) will take their places on the second row of the grid.

Group B competitors embarked upon the second qualifying session of the weekend. Semen Evstigneev (BVM Motorsport) was standing clear at the top of the time sheets when the session was interrupted midway when joint leader in the general classification Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam) stopped on track. The drivers returned to the track for a short final sprint during which the fastest time was exchanged several times. Kevin Jörg pulled the pin with a lap time of 1’32’’ 327 to beat Matt Parry and Andrea Pizzitola (Manor Motorsport MP).

Group A proved to be quicker. Four minutes before the chequered flag, Nyck de Vries was the first to drop below the benchmark set by Kevin Jörg. His second full lap, a 1’32’’ 082 finally proved enough to head Alexander Albon and Dennis Olsen in the time sheets at the end of the session.

Lights go out for the start of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Race 2 at Moscow Raceway at 12:55pm local time.

Nyck de Vries: “We had a difficult day yesterday, although I think our pace has been good all weekend. I was pleased this morning to see that the sun was out because I think this will help us. Securing pole position is always a special feeling. We hope that we can convert this into a win.”
