Nyck de Vries: “Formula One is in the back of my mind”
With Spa-Francorchamps lying less than 400km from his home town, Dutch driver Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) finds himself in fairly familiar surroundings this weekend. A member of the McLaren Young Driver Development Programme, De Vries is nevertheless preparing for the meeting just like any other, as he continues his quest to land the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title.
You’re driving close to home this weekend. Who do you fear going into it?
“No one in particular. There’s a lot of competition in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and I’m just trying to do my job well, without worrying about the others.”
How do you prepare for meetings?
“When I can, I take my time to prepare myself, whether I’ve got ten minutes or just five. I try to make sure that everything’s ready so that I don’t have to worry about anything when I’m in the car. I’ve got a few little superstitions too, like wearing specific undergarments on the Friday, the Saturday and the Sunday.”
What’s your relationship with your family like?
“We have a very good understanding and I’m very close to my father and my sister. It means a lot to me when they’re around, though I don’t think it makes me perform any better. I go to races on my own now, but my sister is coming this weekend because it’s not far from home. She loves watching the races.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?
“I’m focusing on my short-term objective for the time being, but obviously I have a long-term goal, which is to be the Formula One world champion. That’s in the back of my mind, though it’s the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title that I’m going for at the moment.”
Name a song you’d like to listen to now?
“Any DJ Kygo remix!”
Let’s take photo that shows how you’re feeling right now!
