Kevin Jörg, sixth different winner in six races!
At the Moscow Raceway, Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing) got the better of Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) to take his maiden victory in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. After starting from pole, the Dutchman was overtaken on the opening lap but did finish second to allow him to pull away from championship rival Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam), who failed to score on Sunday. Lotus F1 Junior Team driver, Alexander Albon (KTR) crossed the line in third position to pick up his first podium result in the category.
After retiring the day before, Nyck de Vries bounced back in dominating Sunday morning qualifying. The member of the McLaren Young Driver Development Programme claimed his fourth pole position of the season ahead of Kevin Jörg, Alexander Albon, Matt Parry (Fortec Motorsports) and Dennis Olsen (Prema Powerteam).
Kevin Jörg was able to overtake Nyck de Vries at the first corner to take the lead of the race. Alexander Albon tried to make a surprise move to the outside, but couldn’t make it stick and settled into third position ahead of Matt Parry and Dennis Olsen.
Quickly, the two leaders pulled away from the field, which saw plenty of action throughout the race. One such battle featured George Russell (Koiranen GP) and Martin Rump (Fortec Motorsports), which came to a premature end when the two made contact on lap four. The Englishman was later penalized for his move.
After 18 Laps, Kevin Jörg resisted the pressure coming from Nyck de Vries to take the win. Alexander Albon held on for third place ahead of Matt Parry and Dennis Olsen. Andrea Pizzitola finished sixth and was followed by wild-card Matevos Isaakyan (JD Motorsport) and Saturday race winner, Aurélien Panis. Egor Orudzhev (Tech 1 Racing) and Callan O’Keeffe completed the top ten, while Ryan Tveter (Josef Kaufmann Racing) scored his first point of the season.
Quotes
Kevin Jörg: ”I am thrilled about this first success! Nyck didn’t get the best of starts, which let me get past. I then built a lead. I pushed hard and it was enough to hold off Nyck and take this first victory. I think I proved that we are strong on all the circuits. Let’s hope it continues!”
Nyck de Vries: ”After a tough race yesterday, we bounced back in qualifying. Four pole positions from six isn’t too bad. The race result is a little disappointing, but I am still happy. Kevin deserves his victory. He got a better start than us. I pushed all the way until the end to close up, but I wasn’t close enough to think about overtaking”.
Alexander Albon: ”This podium brings to an end what began as a difficult weekend. We struggled to find the necessary pace, but today everything was much better. I hope that this first top three in the category represents a turning point in our season and that we will be able to show what we can do more often.”
