Josh Files, Massimilano Pedalà and Nicolas Milan set for title showdown
The World Series by Renault season officially finished last week, but there is still one more title up for grabs. Indeed, from 1 to 3 November, the 2013 Eurocup Clio campaign reaches its climax with a dedicated final round at Motorland Aragón. And it is a three-way battle for the championship crown, with Josh Files (Team Pyro), Massimiliano Pedalà (Composit Motorsport) and Nicolas Milan (Team LMV CL Brakes) all still in contention.
The 2013 Eurocup Clio season has been dominated by Britain’s Josh Files, Italy’s Massimiliano Pedalà and France’s Nicolas Milan, with the trio clearly enjoying life at the wheel of the new Clio Cup. Files, Pedalà and Milan all scored podium finishes at the season-opening round at Imola, and they go into the Motorland Aragón finale as the top three in the championship standings.
Josh Files, in his debut season among the European elite, was the first driver to win a race this year, followed by Massimiliano Pedalà a day later. Nicolas Milan then took control with a double victory at Spa-Francorchamps, before Massimiliano Pedalà hit back with a dominant weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
Reigning champion Oscar Nogues (RMS Engineering) had to wait until after the summer break for his first taste of success. The Spaniard won the first race at Paul Ricard, but by then his hopes of retaining the title had already gone. Nicolas Milan won race two, while Massimiliano Pedalà and Josh Files both dropped valuable points.
But Files, buoyed by his title success in the Renault Clio Cup UK, responded in style with a double victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The 22-year-old Briton now has his fate in his own hands, as he holds an 11-point lead over Massimiliano Pedalà – a driver nearly twice his age.
Pedalà is the highest-ranked gentleman driver, and finished third in the category in 2011. He will be looking to draw on all his experience and consistency to snatch the overall title. The Italian is also the only driver to have scored points in every race so far this season. Nicolas Milan, meanwhile, finds himself 22 points off the lead. But, like Pedalà, the 33-year-old has all the experience needed to win his second European title.
Elsewhere, several other drivers will be looking to end the season on a high. Eric Trémoulet (Vic’Team) will be pushing for his first win of the season, while challenging for the national title in the old version of the Renault Clio Cup. Oscar Nogues will be determined to sign off with a victory, having only finished three races so far in a frustrating season. Thomas Fjordbach (Polar Seafood Racing) and Antonio Martinez (SMC Junior Motorsport) will also fancy their chances, with Martinez in particular having recorded his first two podium finishes at Barcelona.
The final round, which forms part of the Clio Cup Finals, promises to be wide open. The Clio Cup France and Spain competitions will also be decided, adding even more to the excitement.
Race 1: Saturday 2 November, 13.15 (local time)
