Jerez lap record and pole for George Russell
Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 – Qualifying 2: Wildcard driver George Russell (Tech 1 Racing) set a new Circuito de Jerez lap record to score his first Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 pole of the season on Sunday. The British driver will head the grid from Lotus F1 Junior Team member Alexander Albon (KTR). Sharing the second row will be Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) and Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing), with Jack Aitken (Fortec Motorsports) just behind them.
The drivers in Group B were first out on the track, with Danylo Pronenko (BVM Racing) leading the way before being replaced at the top of the timesheets by Prema Powerteam duo Bruno Bonifacio and Dennis Olsen. Kevin Jörg then went fastest before Alexander Albon lapped in 1:40.076 to end the session on top from the Swiss driver and Matt Parry (Fortec Motorsports).
In Group A, newly crowned Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 champion Nyck de Vries dipped under Alexander Albon’s time, though his hopes of being on pole were dashed by British wildcard George Russell, who posted a new lap record of 1:39.691 to close the session ahead of the Dutchman and Jack Aitken.
The season’s final Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race gets under way at 12.30.
George Russell (Tech 1 Racing): “Yesterday went off really well on what is my first weekend with the team. I missed my second flying lap but I still came in third, so we were confident for today. I’m very happy with this first pole in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and the team has done a really great job. This track is very hard on tyres, but we managed that pretty well yesterday. Let’s see from there.”
