Jerez, a finale featuring titles and families
As a new venue and host to the final round of the World Series by Renault, the Circuito de Jerez promises an exciting show. The names of the three winners in the championships organized by Renault Sport Technologies will be known. This first visit to Andalusia will also be an occasion for some to continue a motor racing family tradition.
In the premier class, a Spaniard will be crowned for the very first time! The duel will pit Roberto Merhi (Zeta Corse) versus Carlos Sainz (DAMS). The two will put in a sneak peak of their battle this Wednesday at a media event at the Plaza España de Seville.
The son and namesake of double World Rally Champion; Carlos Sainz has his fate in his own hands and could become the youngest champion in the history of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Three years after winning the Formula Renault 2.0 North European Cup and his second place in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, the Madrid native would also become the first member of the Red Bull Junior Team to dominate the discipline. Something the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Éric Vergne did not accomplish while in the category.
In the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) has already wrapped up the title. The McLaren Young Driver Development Programme protégé put it out of reach at Circuit Paul Ricard, but the battle for the remaining two spots on the season ending podium will be fierce with eight drivers in contention.
Dennis Olsen (Prema Powerteam) and Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP Motorsport) have the advantage, but those behind hope to put in a surprise. Led by 2014 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award finalist, Alexander Albon (KTR), the rest of the chase group is composed of Egor Orudzhev (Tech 1 Racing), Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam), Ignazio D’Agosto (Koiranen GP), Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Aurélien Panis (ART Junior Team). The son of the last French driver win a Formula 1 Grand Prix can also move into the top three, and get a test in a Formula Renault 3.5 at Motorland Aragón in November.
Following his title in the Protyre Formula Renault, Pietro Fittipaldi (Koiranen GP) will make his debut in one of the most competitive fields in Europe, the grandson of two-time F1 World Champion, Emerson Fittipaldi, will rub shoulders with a third driver with substantial motor racing DNA: Jules Gounon (AVF), son of former F1 driver and 1989 French F3 champion, Jean-Marc Gounon.
Oscar Nogués (Rangoni Corse) has the upper hand in his quest for an unprecedented second crown in the Eurocup Clio. His title rivals are Eric Trémoulet (Vic’Team), who wants to win after losing out on a national title, Mikel Azcona (PCRSport), as well as Massimiliano Pedalà (Composit Motorsport). The Italian is the son of Giuseppe Pedalà, who starred in the Renault 5 Turbo Eurocup and Renault 5 Cup Italia in the 1970s and 80’s.
The best storyline of all may well be found in the French F4 Championship, present in Andalusia in a support role for the World Series by Renault. Three-time Formula Renault 3.5 Series race winner, Marco Sørensen (Tech 1 Racing) will keenly watch his younger brother Lasse head towards the title. Among his rivals are the Lotus F1 Junior Team member, Dorian Boccolacci and Hugo Sugnot-Darniche, grandson of former winner in the world rally championship, Bernard Darniche.
