Jack Aitken scores his first pole

Jack Aitken (Fortec Motorsports) claimed his maiden Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 pole in damp conditions at the Hungaroring on Sunday. Sharing the front row with the British driver is Gustav Malja (Josef Kaufmann Racing), with Charles Leclerc (Fortec Motorsports) and Steijn Schothorst (Manor MP Motorsports) lining up on the second row and Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) completing the front five.

On a track made damp by overnight showers, Saturday’s race winner Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP Motorsport) set the early tempo in Group B. The Frenchman was then trumped by Dennis Olsen (Prema Powerteam) and Gustav Malja, who posted a time of 2:03.541 to lead the way from Steijn Schothorst and Ignazio D’Agosto (Koiranen GP) at the end of a session cut short when Anthoine Hubert (Tech 1 Racing) went off.

Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) dominated the early proceedings in Group A before seeing the Fortec Motorsports pair of Charles Leclerc and Jack Aitken take over. The British driver had the final word, clocking a time of 2:02.274 a minute from the flag to outpace his team-mate and the championship leader and bag pole position.

Sunday’s Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race at the Hungaroring will start at 12:25.

Jack Aitken: “It’s an amazing feeling to get the pole. We’ve been quite strong in the wet it’s actually nice to get that result. After a difficult session yesterday, the key was keeping me entirely. The car has been fantastic, the team did a really good job fixing my mistake. Massive thanks to them. Let’s see how this afternoon goes."
