[Feature] The growth of Eric Trémoulet

Arriving in the Clio championships in 2011, Eric Trémoulet and his Vic’Team squad has grown over the years and won the French Clio Cup last year. The native of Auch is now aiming for the double in France, as well as the Eurocup Clio crown. At the mid-way point of the season, the 26 year old Frenchman is leading in his national championship and is third in the Eurocup, where he is chasing after his first victory.

A motor racing enthusiast as a youngster, Eric Trémoulet quickly frequented the universe and races of the Renault Clio.

”My dad raced in the Clio Cup and he brought me along to race in karting”, he remembers. “I was spotted then I got my start in racing. I won the regional titles and finish second in the French championships twice. Unfortunately, the costs began to rise and I decided to move on to car racing.”

”I began in the French track cups. With the help of my friend, David Dubuc, I was able to race in the Clio Cup. He bought a car that he let me borrow it so I could make my debut. The results came soon after, and thanks to him I am here!”

Winner of the Junior category, Eric Trémoulet and his team decided to continue on in the French Clio Cup, while also attacking the Eurocup Clio. Up against professional teams, he still battled for the national title just until the final race, while finishing sixth in the Eurocup.

With the introduction of the New Clio Cup in 2013, the Vic’Team structure expanded. Always a front-runner in the French and European championship, Eric Trémoulet has won the Driver and Team championship in the French Clio Cup, as well as finish on the Eurocup Clio podium on three occasions.

”It’s a strength of the Clio Cup. In 2011, we began from scratch, one car, a van and a tent! We were the only privateer team, and the results followed. Since last year, we have run other drivers to keep it financially viable. Now, we are a big team composed of friends, volunteers and passionates, but the enthusiasm and spirit have remained the same!”

Since the start of the year, Eric Trémoulet has starred in the French Clio Cup, which he leads at the half-way point of the season. He has also won a pole position and taken two podium finishes in the Eurocup Clio. He is currently third in the general classification and his hopes for victories and the title remain intact.

”I still have yet to win in the Eurocup Clio, but we are so close. It is a little frustrating because I should have won at Motorland, but I made a silly mistake. Nevertheless, I am not obsessing over it. The goal is the double. I re-took the lead in the France in very special circumstances. In the Eurocup, with just two meetings left, it is going to go very quickly. We need victories and a large amount of points to win the championship.”

”The level of the Eurocup Clio is very high. I think that front-wheel drive specialists, like Oscar Nogues and Massimiliano Pedalà, as well as the fast young guys like Josh Files, Mikel Azcona and I, are a cut above the rest. Alex Morgan and the other outsiders are also very quick. It is very heteroclite, which is what contributes to the charm of the Clio. And the points scheme is such that you can quickly drop or rise in the standings, so you have to win, be consistent and not drop out because there are just four meetings.”

As for the future, Eric Trémoulet hopes to make a living as a professional, as do all drivers. Meanwhile, he is demonstrating his skills in the Clio Cup with the ambition of moving on to the next level.

”I have had offers, and I am looking to drive more powerful or rear-wheel drive cars. Unfortunately, the budget is frozen. The difference in budget between sedans or GTs is enormous. At the same time, I have a team with customers, requests for rides and strong results. The budget is a fundamental aspect although the Renault Sport Trophy is the type of car that I could be interested in!”
