Defourny stays on top at Motorland Aragón

Max Defourny (ART Junior Team) continued to dominate the tests for the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, the category known for the world-class quality of its driver development. On the same Motorland Aragón circuit that will host the 2016 season opening round, the Belgian was quickest over the two sessions on the day. His best time of 1:54.853 set in the morning saw him lead the way in front of rookies Lando Norris (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Sacha Fenestraz (Tech 1 Racing). The competitors will be back in action on Monday at Circuit Paul Ricard.

The list of drivers remained the same with the exception of the absence of Bruno Baptista (Fortec Motorsports). Under sunny skies, the morning was busy prior to Max Defourny taking over in hour two. This year’s Formula Renault 2.0 NEC rookie of the year set the time to beat of 1:54.853 ahead of Lando Norris and Sacha Fenestraz. Max Defourny’s time held up in the afternoon session where the Belgian once again got the better of Sacha Fenestraz and Lando Norris. Jehan Daruvala (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Vasily Romanov (Cram Motorsport) completed the top five in both the morning and afternoon and set an identical time in the final session.

INVINCIBLE MAX DEFOURNY (ART JUNIOR TEAM)

“We have been able to work in several areas to improve. While the others were closer compared to yesterday, I am very pleased with my last lap on new tyres. At Circuit Paul Ricard, there will be more new things for me to discover because I have never driven on the configuration that we will use. And I’d also like to do some tests in the rain because we have yet to have any this winter. ”

AMONG THE ROOKIES, SACHA FENESTRAZ (TECH 1 RACING) ENDS THE RUN OF LANDO NORRIS

“Being able to compare myself with Max Defourny gives me a good idea as to where I am. He was very fast today and I did my best although I did lose time in the final hairpin and chicane. I learned so much, but there is still a lot to take in during the upcoming test days. To be ahead of drivers like Norris and Daruvala is also a positive point and reassuring heading into 2016.”

JEHAN DARUVALA (JOSEF KAUFMANN RACING) CONSISTENTLY AMONG THE LEADERS

“We had two positive test days at Motorland Aragón. The car is amazing and we improved through both days. The pace is good and now we’re just looking for the final tweaks. I want to thank Josef Kaufmann Racing and Sahara Force India for giving me this opportunity. ”

MARTIN YOUNG (FORTEC MOTORSPORTS): « AN EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD STEP IN STORE »

“Our main aim during winter testing is to make the rookies competitive in preparing them as best we can, but also turn the returning drivers into champions in maximizing their efficiency and in developing the car for the start of next year. We believe the Formula Renault 2.0 is an exceptionally good step in store. Especially now, it makes the link between karting or F4 to F3 at a reasonable price. If the drivers coming out of the national championships want to learn their trade, then it’s a no-brainer and they should come to the Formula Renault 2.0! The number of former drivers currently in F1 speaks for itself. Even an extraordinary talent like Max Verstappen took part in all the winter Formula Renault 2.0 tests! This underlines to what extent this car is essential in driver development and there are many who have confirmed this at the higher levels. ”
