Aitken and Jörg win at Silverstone
There were two Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 races on the programme at Silverstone this Saturday. Starting from pole position in race 1, Jack Aitken (Koiranen GP) held on to his advantage to take his second victory of the season ahead of rookie Harrison Scott (AVF) and team mate Jake Hughes (Koiranen GP). Race 2 was a bit of a different story with Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing), leaping from third on the grid to score his first triumph in the category since Moscow last year. The Swiss native finished ahead of Jack Aitken and Jake Hughes, who is now just 10 points adrift of championship leader, Louis Delétraz.
In the morning, Jack Aitken claimed his first two pole position of the season in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 tanks to his laps of 1:57.295 and 1:58.260. Qualifying will be aired this Sunday live on the Renault Sport Youtube channel.
Second win for Jack Aitken
When the lights went out, Jack Aitken held on to the command of the race, but the red flag was shown on the opening lap following the accidents of the Fortec Motorsports entries of Jehan Daruvala, Ben Barnicoat and Ferdinand Habsburg. The race re-started behind the safety car. When the action resumed, Jack Aitken controlled then pulled away from Harrison Scott and Kevin Jörg, who was under pressure from Darius Oskoui (ART Junior Team), who found an opening on lap five.
Hardly challenged, Jack Aitken took his second success of the season ahead of Harrison Scott, who scored the best result for a rookie so far this season. Jake Hughes completed the podium after overtaking Kevin Jörg and Darius Oskoui on lap 11. Sixth place Dennis Olsen (Manor MP Motorsport) was followed to the line by Martin Kodric (Fortec Motorsports), Callan O’Keeffe (Fortec Motorsports) and Louis Delétraz. Wild-card entry, Will Palmer (ART Junior Team) rounded out the top ten, ahead of Thiago Vivacqua (JD Motorsport).
Jörg defeats team Koiranen GP
In race 2, Jack Aitken was passed by Kevin Jörg and Ben Barnicoat at the start. Behind the leading trio it was Jake Hughes and Ukyo Sasahara (ART Junior Team), who overtook successively Dennis Olsen, Harrison Scott and Louis Delétraz in the opening minutes of the race. On lap nine, Ben Barnicoat lost pace, which let Jack Aitken and Jake Hughes get by and re-shuffle the deck in the field just until contact with Harrison Scott on lap11.
Kevin Jörg went on for a comfortable win in front of Jack Aitken and Jake Hughes. Ukyo Sasahara (ART Junior Team) was fourth ahead of Thiago Vivacqua, Dennis Olsen and the best placed rookie Darius Oskoui. Louis Delétraz, Anthoine Hubert (Tech 1 Racing) and Callan O’Keeffe all finished in the points.
Quotes
Jack Aitken: “Almost a perfect day. The car is really good. We had a really good qualifying session and the safety car period in race 1 made my life easier after a long time waiting in the pit lane. Unfortunately, I made a mistake at the start of race 2 and it was hard to catch Kevin with used tyres.”
Kevin Jörg: “A long time has passed since Moscow last year, so I am really happy to win, especially as I wasn’t expecting it starting from third on the grid! I got a good start and I was able to quickly build a lead. We saved new tyres in using just two this morning and two this evening. I think it might have helped.”
Jake Hughes: “After two excellent practice sessions, the situation was completely different today. I was a bit disappointed in qualifying, but I was able to do better in the race as Kevin and Darius were battling amongst themselves. There was a little contact when I overtook them, but it was fair. With five podiums from six races, I hope to keep this momentum going tomorrow.”
